The Five Bilieves

Panca Sraddha

In one's life there must be something that is believed to be the truth and become the basis for someone trust. Something is called belief or faith. In Hinduism it is called Panca Sraddha (Five Faith). It is a unity of faith, interconnected, cannot be separated from one to each other, believing in the existence of:

1. Brahman

Brahman is God Almighty, Sang Hyang Widhi. He is the creator, maintainer, and also refunctioner of the world and its contents. In accordance with this function the God sequentially are called Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, better known as Trimurti. Indeed Brahman is a single existence, only one, but because of limited human’s ability to see and imagine him, and according to his position and function, He is called by many names. He is everywhere and covers everything. In Bali, he occupies 9 winds to give grace and holy light to his followers, called Dewata Nawa Sanga: Iswara in the east (Pura Lempuyang), Maheswara in the southest (Pura Goa Lawah), Brahma in the South (Pura Andakasa), Rudra in the southwest (Pura Uluwatu ), Mahadewa in the west (Pura Watukaru), Sangkara in the northwest (Pura Puncak Mangu), Wisnu in the north (Pura Batur), Shambu in the northeast (Pura Besakih), and Siwa in the middle (Pura Besakih). He is also worshiped in every village and family.
  1. Atman

Atman is Brahman’s little spark that makes every human life. Atman which gave every human life is called Jiwatman. Brahman as the source of Atman is called Paramatman. If the Atman leaves the body it is said someone dies. Atman will return to its originator, Brahman, while his soul will go to a place in accordance with its karma. Good karma will take the soul to the heaven, a place that full of joy and fun. Bad karma will take a person to the hell, a place of torture. Heaven and hell are places a person receives the fruit of action based on his/her action (swadharma) in the world. When it was the time, the said soul will fall back to the earth with new body to enjoy fruits of actions and to improve the quality of dharma.
  2. Karmaphala

Karma is the fruit of action for implementing the life in the world. Good actions will bear good karma, otherwise the bad deeds bear bad karma. Good actions are actions which is based on dharma. Rebirth to the world human carry out at least two missions. The first is to fix bad karma in the past life, or to improve the quality of good karma if it is already good enough. The second is to keep delivering dharma to get a better life in the future life. Repeatedly good karma at every rebirth, will lead the soul to eternity and attain Moksha. By knowing the teachings of karmaphala, expected humans at every opportunity to perform dharma and avoid thoughts, words, and actions contrary to dharma. There are 3 possible karmaphala was received. First, the fruit of actions in the previous life that has not been used up so that still can be enjoyed in nowadays life. Secondly, the fruit of actions in this life and enjoyed all of this life without any rest. Third, the fruit actions in the present have not been enjoyed and will be enjoyed in the life to come,
  3. Samkara or Punarbhawa

Punarbhawa is the rebirth of the soul into the world, accompanying with karma from previous live. Rebirth is related to karmaphala. Good karma will bring happiness in the nowadays life, and vice versa the bad karma will bring grief and misery. The reason of rebirth is to “enjoy” the karma, whether it is good or bad karma. In addition, to give opportunity to improve the quality of live. In this life, besides to enjoy the fruits of actions from the past life, it also is an opportunity to promote good karma for the next life. The purpose of life is not simply reach heaven and then to get a better life in the future, but the most important is to reach Moksha, a spiritual union with Brahman. Those who bring bad karma, this is an opportunity to improve themselves and make up for bad karma from previous lives so that can get a better life.
  4. Moksha

Moksha is the union of soul with Brahman. Moksha is the ultimate goal to be achieved by human, the fulfillment of eternal life that is free from worldly connections, and the merging of the soul with the Creator, Brahman. At this stage human freed from punarbhawa (rebirth) and karmaphala (law of karma}.
